Organisation

Ghent University (UGent) was founded in 1817. The university’s activities
(and its buildings) are well intertwined with the socio-economic life of the
city of Ghent, a historical harbour city in the north-western part of Flanders.

UGent is one of the largest universities in Flanders and serves a student
population of more than 32.000. A total staff of about 7.500 people work at UGent.
4.000 of them are directly employed on the basic allowance of which the
teaching activities are financed. This number includes 984 professors (tenured staff) and 1.141 assistants. As all personnel cooperates to perform the three essential roles the institution has set forward (academic education, scientific research and community service), a major part of their activities comprises research. Of the total staff, 3.100 people are financed by research activities, allocated on a competitive basis. This number comprises 2.140 researchers and about 960 technical and administrative employees.
