Hasselt University, founded in 1973, offers
educational and research programmes in four
faculties: Applied Economics, Sciences, Medicine
and Law. Being a relatively young university on an
expanding mission, Hasselt Univrsity employs a
stringent research policy: it follows a spearhead
approach, in combination with a network strategy, in
order to put to work the available expertise and financial
resources to the greatest extent possible.
The spearhead policy implies that large parts of the financial resources for
research are used in a limited number of so-called target domains. They are
organized in research institutes that carry out high-quality interdisciplinary
research, which meets international standards. The quality of Hasselt University research not only benefits from the strong concentration of research assets, but also from the extensive research network that Hasselt University developed. On the one hand, an open dialogue with other researchers and research institutes or groups is essential for the quality of the research output: after all, research results have to withstand the test of a critical discussion. On the other hand, collaborating with other researchers and research institutes or groups contributes to the optimization of the research quantity: Hasselt University is indeed a partner in scores of research projects at Flemish, Belgian, European, and non-European universities.
Hasselt University and Maastricht University (the Netherlands) jointly undertake research activities and offer degree programmes in Life Sciences and Computer Sciences in the framework of the transnational University Limburg (http://www.tul.edu). Furthermore, together with Xios Hogeschool Limburg and the Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg, Hasselt University constitutes the Limburg Association of Higher Education (AUHL: http://www.auhl.be/). This Association led to the foundation of three “Associated Faculties”: the associated Faculty of Applied and Industrial Sciences, the associated Faculty of Architecture and the associated Faculty of Physiotherapy. In these faculties the research basis is provided by Hasselt University.
