Biography
Judith Merkies graduated with a law degree from the University of Amsterdam and pursued a career as a lawyer before taking on post-graduate studies in European and International Law at the Free University Brussels. Merkies has a strong background in working with the institutions of the European Union as well as representing the interests of various industries.
She became a member of the European Parliament following the 2009 elections. Having been elected on a personal vote, Merkies is currently a full member of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee, the Petitions Committee as well as a substitute member on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee.
For Merkies the most challenging and important issue for the future is the creation of a sustainable and creative society. Her aim is to ensure that every person is able to participate in society to the full extent and duration of their lifetimes. Investing in this goal requires the active participation of all players, the promotion a green economy and the creation of jobs through innovation.
