Biography
Ms. Sirpa Pietikäinen (EPP) is a Finnish member of the European parliament. Ms. Pietikäinen is a former Minister of Environment (1991-1995). Her career at the Finnish parliament is extensive, ranging from the year 1983 to 2003. Environmental as well as social and welfare issues have been the focus areas of her work throughout her career.
Ms. Pietikäinen has a long track-record in the field of promoting sustainable development. She has also actively worked with a number of NGOs promoting environmental issues, democracy, and human rights. UN has been one of the focal points of her work, and she has, inter alia, served as Chairman of the United Nations Association of Finland, as well as a Member of the Board of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). She is a current member of the Board of IDEA International.
Ms. Pietikäinen has MSc (Business), and teaches university courses on negotiations theory and practices. In the European parliament, she is a full member of the Committee for Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, as well as a substitute member of the Committee for Economic and Monetary Affairs and the special committee for the Financial, Economic and Social crisis.
