Biography

Dirk Van Melkebeke (°1954) studied social and economic history and was secretary of the ‘Bond Beter Leefmilieu’ from 1982-1988. Later he was appointed as director of the permanent secretariat of the Environment- and Nature Council of Flanders and administrator-general of the Flemish Energy Agency.

Since 1988 Dirk Van Melkebeke worked for several ministerial cabinets: De Batselier, Baldewijns, Stevaert, Bossuyt, Vandenbroucke and Lieten. In this function he built up expertise in fields such as energy, mobility and public works.

From April 1, 2010, he works as secretary-general of the Department of Economy, Science and Innovation, that takes a large part of the policy preparations in these three areas for its account.
Dirk Van Melkebeke is also co-opted member of the Board of Directors of the Fund for Scientific Research - Flanders (FWO).
